Fed: Downer says he hopes US uncertainty resolved soon

Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says he hopes uncertainty over the US presidential
election will be resolved over the next few days.

However, he says Australia will work with whoever emerges as the winner and the current
deadlock has not had any effect on relations between Australia and the US.

The US presidential election has headed back to a divided US Supreme Court where the
Democrats' AL GORE is making a last ditch attempt to force the recounting of more ballots.

The GORE camp has indicated the fight may be over if they cannot convince the Florida
Supreme court to stand by its order to count as many as 45,000 disputed ballots.

That order was temporarily set aside by the US Supreme Court with a 5-4 decision over
the weekend.
