State may scratch Triple Crown game

The state's Triple Crown Lottery game never quite got out of thegate, and Illinois lottery officials are considering putting the gameout to pasture, permanently.

The game, developed by GTECH of Providence, R.I., did not meetsales expectations, confused customers, cost too much both to playand to sponsor, and was not picked up by any other state lotteries.Except for those problems, the Triple Crown didn't do too badly.

Even though the game's sales of about $7 million were well belowthe expected $15 million to $20 million, Triple Crown will break evenor turn a marginal profit, said David Mizeur, deputy director forfinance of the Illinois lottery.
